Recently the National Cancer Institute (NCI) promoted its deputy director, Doug Lowry, to director with the sudden resignation of Harold Varmus, MD. Not only has the NCI been managing through the transition with a new director, it also has been dealing with new budget constraints and uncertainties set by Congress.
However these constraints and uncertainties don’t worry Director Lowry. He states in his interview with MedPage, “I’ve had a fair amount of experience dealing with and understanding the problems, opportunities, and challenges that the Institute has faced [also noting that this is the first time in his career that his research had to take a back seat to running the NCI].” Lowry doesn’t plan to stop his research; however, he plans to spend less time on it in order to address the reduced budget.
