Researchers are determining that simply not having enough participants to fill a clinical trial is not enough-diversity is an essential element in research trials. Electra Paskett, co-director of the Diversity Enhancement Program at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital explains most candidly, “we’re not all alike.” Humans respond differently to treatments based upon a variety of factors, including race and gender. A middle aged, African American male may respond to a treatment completely different than a Caucasian of the same age. Because of the lack of diversity in trials, this difference in reaction may be unknown until the drug or treatment is widely used.
Common misconceptions could prevent minorities from participating in trials; therefore it is even more crucial for minorities to be cognizant of clinical trial benefits. The more educated communities are, the more willing participants will be.
